Scientific Reason for Not Sleeping Towards the North

 Scientific Reason for Not Sleeping Towards the North

In Vastu Shastra and Ayurveda, it is advised not to sleep with your head pointing towards the North. While this belief is rooted in ancient wisdom, modern science also provides logical explanations for this recommendation.

1. Earth's Magnetic Field and Blood Circulation

  • The Earth has a strong magnetic field, with the North Pole acting as a positive pole and the South Pole as a negative pole.
  • The human body also has its own biomagnetic field, and blood contains iron (though not in a magnetized form).
  • When we sleep with our head towards the North, the magnetic force can interfere with blood circulation, putting extra pressure on the brain.
  • This may lead to restlessness, headaches, disturbed sleep, and increased stress levels.

2. Disrupts Brain Function and Causes Sleep Disorders

  • The pineal gland in the brain regulates melatonin, a hormone responsible for sleep cycles.
  • Sleeping in the North-facing direction may interfere with this natural process, leading to poor-quality sleep, insomnia, and mental fatigue.

3. Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Issues

  • The heart works harder when the head is aligned towards the North, as it needs to pump blood against the force of gravity and Earth's magnetic pull.
  • Over time, this could increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart strain, and poor circulation.

4. Scientific Explanation in Terms of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

  • Electronic devices, power lines, and household wiring emit electromagnetic radiation.
  • The human body, when aligned with the Earth's magnetic field in a Northward direction, may become more susceptible to EMF interference, leading to restlessness and disturbed sleep patterns.

5. Evidence from NASA and Other Scientific Studies

  • NASA’s research on astronauts shows that prolonged exposure to altered magnetic fields affects sleep patterns, cognitive function, and physiological processes.
  • Some sleep studies suggest that altering head direction can improve sleep quality and reduce disturbances.

What is the Best Sleeping Direction?

Based on Vastu Shastra and scientific research, the ideal sleeping positions are:

East: Enhances brain function, memory, and spiritual growth.
South: Considered the best direction as it aligns with Earth’s energy flow and promotes deep, restorative sleep.
North: Avoid this position due to magnetic and circulatory issues.
West: Acceptable but may cause restlessness or increased activity.

While traditional Vastu beliefs emphasize avoiding the North direction for sleep, modern science supports this with logical explanations related to magnetism, circulation, and sleep quality. If you experience poor sleep, fatigue, or stress, changing your sleep direction to South or East might improve your overall well-being.

A Comprehensive Guide On The North Facing House

North, the cardinal direction is always shown on the top. If you have observed a magnetic compass has
North is on the top and has zero degrees or 360 degrees listed. Hence, the North direction holds importance in books for ages.

 Many people who hardly have knowledge of Vastu Shastra does not believe in the importance of directions for constructing a house, but if you are interested in knowing about North direction Vastu Shastra principles, you should definitely read this blog.

 The North direction holds importance in ancient literature and is considered the direction of Lord Kubera, the god of wealth. Hence the main door located in the North direction of the house is highly auspicious. Having said that, none of the directions are considered inauspicious, but yes, the placement of things in different directions can have a different impact on the persons living inside the house.

 As mentioned, North direction is pious but wait... Let’s first understand what is a North Facing house?

 The direction of the road near the house plays a major role in defining the house orientation. When you step out on the road next to the house, and the direction you face defines the house orientation. If the direction is North, it is a North facing house.

 Vastu Shastra has laid down some rules for locating the main entrance door of the house, which is important for making the place auspicious or inauspicious. Here is the point where the North direction facing the entrance door rules over the other directions. If you are still confused with the finalization of the entrance door placement, understand the 9 padas of the Northside. All the 9 padas hold different importance and auspiciousness in the Vastu Shastra. Place your house towards an auspicious zone as per diagram below.

  Some of the things to avoid while constructing a North-facing house are listed below. Keep reading..

       No toilets should be made in the North-east corner;

       No bathrooms should be made in the North-east corner;

       Make sure that you do not have a septic tank in the North-east corner;

     Never construct staircases on the North side of the house;

       One should make sure that the house slopes don’t go from North to South;

      Since the north direction is considered the source of positivity, no waste or dustbins should be placed in that direction;

       You can always have a pooja room in the North-east direction;

       A living room should be made in the North-east direction of the house;

       The guest room should be in the North-west direction;

       Do not make the place look cluttered in the north-east direction of the house;

       The master bedroom should be made in the South-west direction of the North facing house.

These simple Vastu tips for the North facing house make life much easier and brings peace and security in the house. Contact a Vastu Shastra expert for further consultation of a North facing house. Shastra

Representative sculptures have multiple implications

Analyzing and understanding the significance of idols and symbolic items used in home décor from a vaastu perspective
(Our this article was published in DNA news paper on 11 June 2016
Essential Elements
five elements of vastu

Idols are like a symbol, something visible representing something invisible. They are not just decorative pieces made by sculptors but are guiding channels through which our heart is attracted towards the higher self.
Kubera is the god of wealth and the lord of Uttaradisha (north direction). He is also known as Dhanapati, the lord of riches. He is one of the guardians of the directions, representing the north according to Vaastu Shastra.

Annapurna is the Goddess of Nourishment, who is full, complete, and perfect with food and grains. According to Vaastu Shastra, a small brass idol of Annapurna placed in the rice jar brings abundance to prosperity in the family.
The elephant is a sacred animal for many oriental cultures and carries a great amount of symbolism. An elephant is a symbol of strength, power, virility, longevity, fidelity, dignity, intelligence and wisdom. Place a pair of elephants with their trunks up the front door of homes or offices to bring good fortune and strength to the family.
When placed in the bedroom, the elephant brings harmony and promotes love and fidelity among couples. The elephant also symbolizes fertility because Buddha is said to be conceived when he entered his mother's womb as a white elephant. Childless couples or those wishing to have more children should place elephant images in their bedroom to increase fertility.
Sun
vastu brass sun
The solar radiation that reaches earth acts as the main source of vitamin D for the sustenance of life on this planet. Without it, life on the earth would not flourish. In modern architecture, every house does not have access to morning sun rays. According to research done by Vaastu experts, being deprived of morning sun rays could result in poor health conditions.
Such Vaastu defects can be corrected by fixing a painting or symbol of the sun on the east wall of the house or business locations.

The Medicine Buddha is depicted sitting on a lotus throne (the lotus flower is the symbol of purity of mind and of the earth) in the posture of vajrasana (also known as the diamond position, which was assumed by Buddha Shakyamuni on the last day before his enlightenment). With his left hand, he forms the gesture of absolute balance.
The gesture signifies the state in which objective consciousness is removed. The gesture was assumed by the Buddha as he sat under a fig tree where he submerged himself in meditation and it helped him reach a state of deep reflection. The left-hand forms the gesture of comfort and fearlessness, which signifies blessing and protection.
Meditating with a medicine Buddha creates great therapeutic energy, which is useful for healing oneself and others.
As the king of the animal world, the lion stands for battle and power. In western culture, the lion stands for fire, the sun, and gold. When kings and people of authority wanted to display their wealth, power, and prestige to the outside world, they would place sculptures of lions at the entrances to their houses or in the palace garden. The Lions informed everybody entering that this was the residence of an important person who demanded respect.
In many ancient cultures, the lion is a symbol of protection for the entrance to a building. The lion pair always stands outside the front door to protect against bad luck entering the house. At many places, entrance gates that are guarded by lions are also called lion gates.
Shankha or conch shell with images of Lord Ganesha is believed to ward off all negativities and bring harmony and auspiciousness to the home. The presence of Lord Ganesha paves the way for Riddhi and Siddhi.

Narendra Modi on Vastu Shastra

Hon. Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Manipur's capital Imphal on 8th Feb'13. In his speech, he said "Even Vaastu-Shastra says the north-eastern part of a house should be given maximum care. India will prosper only when the north-east will.

Importance of Northeast direction in Vaastu tenets (Our article in DNA)
 Ancient texts attribute special importance to the Ishanya corner (the northeast direction) in the selection of the plot, construction of the home and even the exterior and interior structure and setting of the rooms. This direction is regarded as highly charged with energies.
 The prayer room and meditation center or room should be constructed in the North East corner.  As the sun rises from the east, one naturally gets maximum (Vital) energy from it in this direction.
 The north-east direction is enriched with the confluence of this energy pool with the magnetic and subtle energy currents of the earth.
 Although under a different approach and in a different language, the principles and theories of Vaastu Shastra thoroughly take in to account these interconnected effects together with the geological and geophysical aspects.
The northeast direction is referred to as an auspicious direction in Vaastu Shastra. It is important to maintain a state of cleanliness and purity in this direction in the house and workplace.
 No heavy items should be kept in this direction and should avoid keeping a broomstick or any other sanitary items there. Also, the toilet or kitchen should never be placed in this sector.
If not used for any devotional purposes, this corner(direction in the house) may be left clean and empty even if it happens to be located in the living room or bedroom. Keeping dirt and debris in this corner of the house is said to attract malevolent effects such as difficulties, losses, tensions in personal relationships etc.
The cosmic rays from the sun, moon and other planets also have an effect on the human body. These rays to a great extent are absorbed by water, therefore, it is beneficial to have wells and underground water tanks in the northeast direction.

There should be no constructions in this direction since the auspicious rays would be obstructed. This corner of the plot should be depressed either naturally or artificially.

Paintings & Pictures influencing Vastu of your House

Paintings & Pictures influencing Vastu of your house

Much of what we know today about ancient culture has been learned from ancient artwork. Philosophy and symbolism play a huge role in every culture. Every object in the house has its own energy has a strong influence on the people staying there. Paintings connect you to your personal life and culture.

Decorating a home with paintings and pictures is one of the best ways to bring life-supporting energies influencing finance, education, relationship, health, children as well as reputation.

Artwork adds an extra spark of elegance to your house & provides you the vibrant energy that you need to have a great day. Although painting preferences may vary from home to home, there are still some basic rules to keep in mind while choosing a painting.

Here's something fascinating: Professor Semir Zeki, a renowned neurobiologist at the University College of London, reveals that "When we gaze upon beauty, our brain's pleasure and reward centers light up with activity. Dopamine—that magical 'feel-good' neurotransmitter—floods through these areas. Essentially, these centers awaken with the same intensity we experience during moments of deep love and passionate desire."

Your subconscious is greatly influenced by your environment, which puts you in the mood to dream, relax and strengthen your imagination.

Let us share time-honored wisdom from Vastu Shastra (and even Feng Shui)—simple yet profound practices that will nurture harmony, peace, and positive energy throughout your beloved home.

Paintings in Living Room

How do you shape a living room that feels warm yet looks like a gallery? Many of us overlook how deeply the art in our home shapes the mood.

The pieces you choose greet every guest at the door and quietly honor your own story—your colors, memories, and dreams—through thoughtful paintings and soulful objects.

Wall art becomes the heart that breathes kindness and welcome into the room.

Recommended paintings for living room:-

Painting of deep path, Flowing river, rising sun, running horses, artificial window

Imagine a painting where water flows—river, waterfall, or a graceful fish—quietly guiding fresh, positive energy into your work and career. The movement reminds your space (and your heart) to keep moving forward.

Many Vastu & Feng Shui experts cherish the golden fish—whether a painting or sculpture—as a timeless symbol of prosperity. Its gentle glow invites growth, opens doors, and nurtures both career progress and money luck.

If you’re dreaming of a powerful career path, choose an image of an endless road. That open horizon whispers possibility—more chances, better ideas, and new beginnings waiting just ahead.

The gentle morning sun, with its healing light, deeply nourishes your well-being. It’s our most natural source of vitamin D. In spaces that miss the dawn, a rising-sun painting can invite that life-giving energy. Avoid images of the sun with a mountain—the mountain isn’t recommended in the solar zone, according to Vastu Shastra.

Paintings for bedroom

A bedroom is where you slip away, safe from the world’s noise and weight. It’s your sanctuary, a quiet cocoon, and each room carries a spirit of its own—threads of color and memory that gently become part of you.

Want a retreat that melts stress the moment you enter? Start with soothing colours and intentional wall art. Choose harmony-and-love themes to calm the heart. Place a pair of Warli love paintings in the bedroom; their tender rhythm adds a soft, romantic glow to the space. They whisper togetherness and invite rest.

Green bamboo artwork is a beautiful choice, symbolizing resilience, renewal, and quiet strength. Evergreen through all seasons, it gently blesses your home with steady, year-round vitality and health. For the best results, place it with accurate magnetic-compass alignment. This imagery is especially supportive when the bedroom lies in the southeast zone.

Fine art America offers a wide choice of Vastu paintings for people staying in the USA.

The deer embodies quiet endurance, tender grace, and a life that flows long—an ageless symbol of longevity. Place its artwork in the health sector of your bedroom to gently invite strength, balance, and lasting well-being.

Pine trees interact with human energy in a cleansing manner. Placing this in your health sector helps in removing negative energies from your surroundings and auric field. You can realign your home to get rid of negativity, by using positively recommended paintings.

Mountain painting in the southwest zone enhances the earth element. This is a good painting in the bedroom. It indicates strength, support, and stability.

There are several ways to improve the relationship energy in your bedroom. Painting of hearts, birds, flowers, etc. in a pair, photos of romantic holidays, happy couple photographs are highly recommended in the bedroom of a couple in a relationship zone.  Love, romance & harmony, you need more in life, then use beautiful loving painting recommended by experts.

Paintings in Kids' room

Kids are always developing and it's important to keep this in mind while designing their rooms.  Art helps in improving creativity through its many forms like painting or sculpture when displayed in kids' rooms. It encourages fine motor skills development in children as well as nerve development and problem-solving abilities.

Artwork which displays teamwork,  speed, and creativity is best suitable in children's rooms.

Artwork for kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of any home, and it's easy to see why. It provides a space for gathering with friends and family over delicious food. When choosing artwork for your walls in this important room in your house always consider what you love about food - whether that be eating or creating something new.

Fire, together with Water, Earth, Wind, and space is one of the five known basic Elements, which represent the substance of the world. According to Vastu Shastra, premises having missing fire activities at the fire element zone suffers from poor health and slow money turnover. Painting beautiful candles or lamp symbolically serves you as an alternate source to the fire element.

Business paintings

A fascinating new study examined how different types of workplace settings can affect employees' well-being during the workday--the result? A negative impact if there is no visual stimulus around them!

Art in the workplace can help to improve work productivity. A study of 500 employers found that companies with more artwork had higher revenues, lower absentee rates, and better company culture than those without any art on their walls. The presence of paintings or sculptures also made employees feel happier about themselves as well as being able to enjoy leisure time outside the office setting when they were not working which increased morale even further amongst them all too.

People looking for overseas or export business can use pictures of foreign currencies or the image of a foreign destination to improve travel luck. You can further enhance the energy of the painting by putting small copper pyramid chips (energy activator) behind the painting.

Recommended paintings for offices:-

Painting of overseas currency, endless paths, flowing rivers, tall buildings, etc.

 Precautions & suggestions

  • Paintings in the children's room, guest room, youngsters, etc should be placed with the advice of a Vastu expert. The wrong location of the painting can be harmful and invite unwanted problems.
  • The water element in the earth zone are harmful, fire pictures in the water zone (northern) is dangerous, and Dominating earth element painting in the water zone may put your all work on stay.
  • Select a picture that inspires you. The artwork should invoke instant vibrant but comfortable energy once you look at the picture. Pictures can be used to shift, improve, correct & balance the energy in your personal & business environment.

During our Vastu consultation, we have seen many houses having paintings that do not evoke any positive feelings. We have recommended various paintings to our clients in India as well as abroad for their various issues related to relationships, career, health, travel, creativity & money.  They have experienced positive changes in their surrounding energy with recommended paintings.

FAQ on paintings

Q1: Are Vastu paintings necessary or just optional décor?
Vastu paintings are not mandatory, but they are a high-impact, low-effort remedy. If you're renting or can't renovate, paintings let you align room energy without breaking walls. In our  34-year experience, clients who pair structural Vastu with intentional art report faster, more noticeable shifts in ambience and behavior.

Q2: Which painting brings prosperity to the home?
Rising sun, blooming lotus, flowing rivers, and golden fields symbolize growth and abundance. Place them in the entrance, north wall, or northeast corner. Colors: yellow, gold, light green, orange. Avoid sinking ships, wilted flowers, or barren landscapes—they send the opposite signal.

Q3: Where should I avoid water and mountain motifs?
Water (rivers, oceans, waterfalls): Avoid in the south, southeast (fire zones), and directly behind your bed (creates restless energy). Best in north, east, northeast.
Mountains: Avoid in children's rooms (too heavy) and in front of your desk (blocks forward movement). Mountains are grounding—place them behind you (southwest, west) for support.

Q4: Can I keep religious art along with Vastu paintings?
Yes, absolutely. Place religious art in the pooja room, northeast, or east walls. Treat them with respect—avoid mixing sacred images with random décor on the same wall. If your living room has a Ganesha painting, let it be the hero—don't crowd it with unrelated themes.

Q5: Will Vastu paintings fix all my problems?
No. Vastu is a supportive environmental practice, not a magic cure. Paintings create daily visual cues that influence mood and behavior, but outcomes depend on many factors—relationships, health, career, effort, timing. Think of Vastu paintings as part of a holistic lifestyle, like eating well or exercising. They help, but they're not the only thing.

Q6: Is there a difference between apartment and villa Vastu painting rules?
Core principles stay the same—directions, elements, themes. Villas offer more flexibility (outdoor walls, multiple entry points). Apartments need to work within fixed layouts, so focus on optimizing what you control: living room, bedroom, entrance wall, study corner. Small spaces benefit more from one impactful painting than multiple small ones.

Q7: Can I use digital art or printed posters, or must it be original?
High-quality prints work fine—the visual impact and theme matter more than the price tag. However, original art or limited-edition prints often carry more intentional energy because an artist poured focus into them. If budget allows, commission custom Vastu art from local painters—it personalizes your space and supports artisans.

Seeking Vastu Opinion - Before You Buy home, office or factory

Seeking Vastu Opinion-  Before You Buy

If you've finally found that premises you think you could live or work in then why not have it assessed to find out what type of vibrations it will attract to you. You never know... this is the best time to seek a vastu opinion before signing papers.

A lot of people know the importance of acquiring a plot, house or business place with good vastu hoping to benefit from its positive effects that can eventually become a “Prosperity  Booster”.

Some premises do not carry good energy and to fix them can cost a lot of time & money. Hence having a vastu analysis done before you buy is extremely valuable &  beneficial.

History of the site

If possible, find out about the previous occupant /inhabitants of the property. A death that occurred in the house or previous owners who were unsuccessful in their endeavors may signify negative energy flow. In addition, all vegetation grown in the area should look green and welcoming. Birds and squirrels should appear healthy.
 A person should also avoid places having the following location as well as surroundings:-

  • A hospital for it holds the frequency or energy of the sick and the dead
  • A cemetery that could cause haunting,
  • A slaughter house
  • A temple or a church in front of the main door
  • A shadow of a tall building or flag of the temple falling on the property
  • Prison

Vastu opinion when buying an office

Vibrant vastu at the Office or in the corporate environment is all about creating your pathway to the greater success.
A large proportion of your time needs to be engaged in communication with the outside world. Hence vastu energy for the office is no different than vastu for the home. People spend 8-10 hours a day for five or six days a week.  You need to make important decisions in your office.   Needless to say, you want to be in an environment where it enhances decision making, communication and relationship building.

When first setting up your business premises, choose an office or work space in a prosperous neighborhood, you will have an advantage of the positive surrounding.

When you walk in the entrance or lobby of your office, you should feel a wide and spacious look. Ideally, visitors and staff should feel like they're entering a large, comfortable area.
Most important, the entrance should be in positive & auspicious zone as per vastu rules to have better growth and continuous success.

Offices or buildings that have an L shape or a missing corner are considered imbalanced and should be bought only if corrections are possible.

Sitting in the power position is a key element in the office vastu.  Authentic Vastu analysis suggests a power spot in office which can reserved for the key people of the organization. The office you wish to buy should be able to fit the required seating arrangement for directors, CEO, managers. Marketing executives as well as staff.

Bathrooms, Toilets, and pantry tend to leak energy if placed in the northeast or southwest zone. It will accumulate lower vibrations.  Such property should be bought subject to the strong vastu corrections.
Later on, at the planning stage- a proper Vastu arrangement of the office helps you feel inspired, productive, and powerful. And when done well, it will enhance your creativity, discipline, and success.

Vastu opinion when buying a plot

The first thing that you should consider is the vibrations of the land. This can be found out by the vastu expert using dowsing techniques with the instruments like pendulum or rods.
You should look for land that with rich soil that supports life. A plot with lush green vegetation is an excellent property to acquire.
According to Vastu Shastra, a square or rectangular shaped plots are auspicious. The ratio of the length to width of the land should not be too large which would result in a long strip. An ideal ratio of the length to width of the land should not be more than 2.5:1.
Irregular shaped plots with missing corners are highly inauspicious and you should avoid them.  A triangle shape is worst. According to an ancient text, triangular land is highly inauspicious &  gives more pain.
Avoid plot that faces a T-junction, electrical sub-station, high-tension wire or tall tower.
In addition to the -level of the plot, the location of the water body, road access etc. are also important while assessing a property.

Vastu opinion when buying a House

External factors contribute about 30% in case of flat and 50% in case of the independent bungalow. Staircase, lifts, garden, water bodies, power stations, surrounding roads,  mountain etc. have a huge impact of the house to be surveyed as per vastu.

Always buy a new or “successful” home. A new home does not have any previous history, making these the optimal choice. However, if you are looking at a resale  home, buy one from someone who is moving into a bigger house

If possible, avoid any house with the toilet or kitchen located at the Southwest or Northeast sectors, as these may create financial and health challenges.

A house with a toilet located in the center of the house is considered highly inauspicious.

The house should not have a “Dwar Vedh”. The front door is not to be impeded by things like a  tree or electric pole placed outside in direct alignment with the main door.

Some believe that houses facing the South can create a problem in life. However, this is a myth that actually causes a lot of confusion resulting in people missing out on opportunities in owning a good house. Internal placement like kitchen, bedroom, bathrooms, and windows, if placed correctly it brings the same prosperity with the house having north and east-facing entrances.

An important part of selecting a home with positive energy has to do with your intuition. Pay attention from the moment you approach your new property. Is it a place you feel like you would like to live? Does it have many of the features that are important to you? What type of surrounding are outside? You will get feedback.

How Vastu Shastra Consultant can help you in House Hunting?

The only thing better before you move in, is to bring a vastu expert along when you choose the property or site for your new office, home or Industry.

Vastu Stage One:-
For vastu opinion, a consultant will need an up-to-date plot or Floor Plan that's in scale showing an accurate floor space ratio with a compass direction.
This will help vastu expert to provide you with a report showing the strength of the property, positive and negative features as well as an opinion about the site surveyed.
Nowadays it is possible to obtain a quick opinion on the property by sending a scanned copy of the property by email or WhatsApp or Skype.

Vastu stage two:-
All necessary information workflow, executives, management, offices, and public spaces: parking lot, lobby, conference rooms, bathrooms, lunch/break area in case of offices can be planned once stage I is finalized and confirmed.
In case of residential property, the layout can be made to fit all the requirements about bedrooms, kitchen, tranquility zone, Study room, guest room, store room, bathroom, home office as well as the garden.
